Feature walls look especially good in black, as they create a stark contrast with a brighter shade or blend well with browns and greens. This is best in larger rooms as dark colours on your walls will make it feel smaller.

Darker colours need to have the right sheen levels; with black paint it’s more important to get right than any other.  

A glossy finish is popular for black as a matte finish can look very flat. However, the glossier the surface the more natural and artificial light it will reflect, which can affect the overall look your black paint creates. Mid-sheen is the best of both worlds, but don’t be afraid to test both extremes to see how they look.  

 Using Black Paint Outside 

One of the biggest benefits of black paint is that scuffs, dents, and scratches don’t show up as easily. This makes it an ideal for using on exterior surfaces that will suffer a lot of wear and tear.  

You can maximise this by choosing a tough paint that is naturally resistant to wear too, guaranteeing that your surfaces will look fantastic for years to come.  

It’s a bold choice, but using black fence paint on sheds and fences looks great. It will complement the green of your grass, the browns and greys of your borders, and any bright-coloured flowers and plants you have.
