Description
When the weather is warm, and there is only a light breeze in the air, itโs the perfect time to dive into some garden redecorating. There are a lot of surfaces to paint out there, from fences and fence gates to garden furniture and your patio slabs.
However, if there is a worn-out shed in the corner of your garden, itโll let the side down no matter how much you paint around it. Thankfully, our oil based shed paint is one of the best around, and itโs available in any colour you can imagine.
The Best Shed Paint
Like fences, sheds are exposed to the elements 24/7, every day of the year. Wind, rain, snow, and even direct sunlight will wear out the paint or varnish after a few years. If this existing paint flakes away, exposing the surface underneath, your shed will be more likely to rot or be at risk of fungal and insect attack.
To prevent this, a quality shed paint is needed. Regular satinwood paint will work in the short term, but a specialist product will guarantee maximum protection. Our oil based shed paint works on both wood and metal surfaces, so you can preserve every inch of your shed or barn, including hinges, bolts, and the door handles.
Benefits of Oil Based Paint for Sheds
Exterior paints can be split into two main categories: water based, and oil based. Both are similar and offer great protection if you choose your paint wisely, but for a shed, one stands out.
Durability is everything, even if your shed is tucked away in a corner or under shelter, the surface needs to be preserved. Oil based paints are naturally thicker than their water-based counterparts, which adds extra toughness and makes the surface repel rain. If your shed has a flat roof, this is especially important, as standing water will rot the surface in a few months or less if ignored.
Some people choose a wood stain or varnish for their shed. While these look great, especially if you prefer the natural woodgrain to show through, youโll need to add new layers every few years.
If you apply an even coat or two of quality oil based shed paint, yours will look fantastic for up to a decade.
Best Colour for Sheds
A shed in perfect condition can still be an eyesore if you like your garden to look a certain way. Plain wood can clash with a range of greens, browns, and bolder colours, and choosing a colour that works with it can spoil your vision.
As we mentioned, some people like the natural wood look, and choose a clear varnish or wood stain that protects the surface with a transparent layer, so your shed doesnโt look like it has been painted at all. However, most exterior paints can have a natural shade, giving you the best of both worlds.
No matter which colour suits you, we have the paint you need. Our oil based shed paint is part of our colour system. Simply enter an RAL or British Standard code at checkout and weโll mix any colour you can imagine.
Best Sheen for Sheds
The sheen you pick for your shed is arguably as important as the colour. As itโs outside, your shed is exposed to a wide range of light levels. In direct sunlight, a high-sheen finish will have a much bolder colour but could cause glare. This will only be for a few hours a day at most, but itโs worth keeping in mind before you commit.
We always recommend testing your paint on an inconspicuous area first, so you can see how it looks once dry, and how it reacts to light throughout the day/night.
Unfortunately, one of the downsides of an oil based exterior paint is that your sheen options are limited. Due to the oil-based compound, these paints are naturally glossy, and therefore out of the question if you have your heart set on a matte finish.
However, if you like some sheen, youโre in luck, as oil-based paints do it better than any other!
