Description

White spirit is an essential part of any painter and decorators arsenal.

What is White Spirit?

White Spirit, also known as mineral spirit, paint thinner or turpentine substitute is a mixture of chemicals known as petroleum hydrocarbons. It’s a colourless, flammable liquid with a strong odour used in painting, cleaning and degreasing.

What is White Spirit Used For?

White spirit is used to clean paint brushes, paint rollers and other equipment after using oil-based paint. It can also be used to thin oil-based paints to allow for easier application of the paint.

White spirit is a solvent-based transparent fluid that can be used to clean decorating tools and many types of application.

Made from a blend of hydrocarbons, our white spirit is ideal for thinning paint, varnish, and wood treatments, as well as for cleaning paint brushes, paint rollers, and other painting tools.

How to Clean Brushes With White Spirit?

Firstly you should remove as much paint from the paint brushes as you can using a rag or some newspaper, then place them in a tub or container brush side down.

Pour the white spirit in the container just enough to cover the bristles. Swirl the white spirit in the container and gently press the brush down so that the white spirit can penetrate the bristles thoroughly.ย Repeat this process with fresh white spirit again and again until the liquid remains clear.

Once the white spirit is clear pour it away and soak the brush in warm soapy water cleaning it the same way as you did with the white spirit.

Remove the brush from the soapy water and rinse it under the tap, removing as much soap as possible, and dry the brush by shaking it and using a dry rag.

Lastly to test that the brush is clean, brush it on some white paper and if there is no trace of paint you know that they are ready for your next painting project, and ensure that the brushes will last for as long as possible.

Thinning Paint With White Spirit

Oil-based paints and varnishes are often quite thick and difficult to apply, particularly in the winter as cold weather tends to thicken up oil-based paint. White spirit is perfect for thinning your paint but, it’s vital that you don’t use too much.

Too much white spirit can ruin the colour of your paint, but also make the paint too thin which can cause drips in the finish and makes it a lot harder to have an even finish.

To avoid this just add a couple of drops of white spirit and stir it. If after the first time it’s still too thick don’t be tempted to add more than a few drops. Just add paint thinner slowly until you have the desired consistency.

FAQ's

How long does the smell of white spirit last?

Unfortunately white spirit does have a very strong odour that is quite unpleasant, however you’ll be happy to know it only takes a couple of hours for white spirit to evaporate, if it has good ventilation. When the white spirit evaporates the smell will also disappear.

How to remove paint from clothes?

To remove paint from clothes, you should scrape of all the paint that you can, then soak the clothes in warm water. After leaving it in for around 30 minutes, you should dab it with some white spirit on a cloth soaking the stain. Then you should rinse it with warm soapy water till its removed. If the stain is still there you just repeat the process until it’ has gone.

Should you where gloves when using white spirit?

We would recommend you use rubber gloves when using white spirit to avoid the risk of skin contact. As well as gloves we suggest appropriate clothing coving skin on your arms and even safety glasses, as eye exposure can cause instant stinging and a burning sensation that we believe is just not worth the risk.

What do you do when you get white spirit on your skin?

As soon as the white spirit makes contact with your skin you should rinse it in water for at least 10 minutes, as it is hazardous chemical. If you were not to rinse it off immediately then it is likely you will experience irritation, drying, or cracking.
