Over the years we’ve talked about painting fences a lot. As the weather gets warmer it’s one of those exterior painting jobs that you’ll be keen to tick off, ensuring that your garden looks its best for barbeques and quality time in the garden.
One think we rarely do in our blogs is focus on one specific colour. One of the biggest selling points of many of our paint products is that they are available in a wide variety of colour. But green fence paint is so versatile, that we decided it deserves some time in the spotlight.
So let us explain why green fence paint is the best fence paint colour for your garden this summer.
Why Choose Green Fence Paint
Unless you’re a big fan of concrete, you want your garden to be green. Hedges, plants, the lawn, and more all add multiple shades of green that make your garden the place to be on a nice day.
If you have a green thumb, you’ll likely have a lot more colours in the mix, from the brightness of flowers to mainstays like sheds and garden furniture.
Your fences should always be a centerpiece, not something you try to hide behind greenery because you never liked how they look. Although the natural wood is very appealing, it doesn’t suit every garden, and shades of brown, grey, or white don’t always work either.
Instead of trying to find a fence paint colour that will always stick out, choose one that will enhance everything around it.
How Green Blends with Gardens and Landscaping
The colour green suits your garden. By painting your fence a dark shade of green, it will make the lighter shades of plants and your grass stand out. Or you can have a similar effect with lighter green.
Some gardens have a bit too much brown, and your fences are a major contributor to that. If you paint them a colour that blends into the background more, everything will flow together and the brighter colours will be the ones that stand out.
The way your garden looks is often determined by lighting. If you use a lot of light colours, it can be hard to look at when the sun is out. On the other hand, if your garden is naturally shadowy, you don’t want to add a lot of dark colours as it’ll just look gloomy. With multiple shades and finishes, you can find green fence paint that suits any garden.
But which type of paint is best for fences?
Green Oil Based Fence Paint
Oil-based paints are known for their toughness. A thicker compound means higher durability, so it will look better for longer.
Other benefits of green oil-based fence paint include:
- High sheen level
- More weather resistance
- Repels water
But the main reason to pick oil-based paints instead of acrylic will always be the durability. However, one of the biggest downsides of oil-based paint is the VOCs the compound contains. Although we do our best to keep VOCs as low as possible, some of our paints aren’t 100% safe for people and pets.
Oil-based paints are also trickier to use for beginners – another thing to keep in mind when picking your paint. But if durability is your primary goal, look no further.
Green Acrylic Fence Paint
Although not quite as tough as its oil-based counterparts, acrylic fence paint is still durable and far more versatile.
The main benefits of green acrylic fence paint are:
- More sheen options
- Easier to clean
- Easier to use
- Dries faster than oil-based paint
If you have a million exterior painting jobs to do, acrylic paint is the best for efficiency. If you choose our shed and fence paint, you can use it on multiple surfaces, not just your fences. For people who like uniformity across their garden, this is the best value for money.

FAQ's
Can I use green fence paint on all types of wood?
We wouldn’t recommend green fence paint for all types of exterior wood, as they’re not designed for high traffic areas like decking so it’s best to choose a specialist decking paint for that.
However, our fence paint is perfect for sheds, and painting garden furniture as well as your fences, and having a quality green fence paint that matches your shed and outdoor furniture can create a natural look to your garden.
Can you paint over green algae on fences?
Before painting your fences you should always make sure to remove any algae, dirt or mould, as painting directly over them courses moisture to be trapped under the paint, which can lead to rot. It can also make the finish look uneven particularly for painting over algae and can cause the paint to peel off after only a couple months rather than years if done properly.
To remove the algae all you need to do is pressure wash your fences and make sure you leave them to dry before you begin painting or adding your undercoat.
Does green fence paint make a garden look bigger?
Green fence paint can be used to make your fences blend in to it’s surrounds particularly for rural houses surrounded by countryside. This can give the illusion of more space in your garden due to the softening of the boundaries.
Is green fence paint better than brown?
It depends what you’re looking for.
Brown Fence Paint is good at hiding imperfections such as dirt, and missed spots when painted, and also pairs well with colourful plants in your garden.
Green Fence Paint creates the illusion of making you’re garden appear bigger than it is, and pairs well with plants and flowers in your garden.
