The kitchen is often described as ‘the heart of your home’ – and for good reason. Sure you may make plenty of memories in your living room and elsewhere, but the kitchen is by far the most important room of the house.
From hosting dinner parties to setting out snacks before a movie night, fixing packed lunches or even baking a cake, we spend a lot of time in our kitchens that isn’t just making a meal.
Over time, the humid air in your kitchen will stain and wear out the paint on your walls and other surfaces. When this is the case, it’s time to give your kitchen some love with our specially designed kitchen paint.
Should I Paint my Kitchen?
Yes! Painting kitchen surfaces doesn’t just make them look better; it will protect them from stains and wear for years to come.
Kitchens become very humid when you cook regularly. Even with a window open, cooking food on the hob or in the oven will add a lot of moisture to the air. Regular interior paint will crack, peel, or wear away when exposed to too much moisture.
Our kitchen paint has been designed to resist this humidity. It is water-based but has a durable compound that repels the moisture in the air, keeping your walls looking bright and colourful for up to a decade.
Best Paint for Kitchen Walls
Durability is key when choosing paint for kitchens. Alongside grease and stains from cooking, the walls can be scuffed, stained, and marked by people and pets brushing against them over time. If you have to move anything through your kitchen, your walls might get scraped more than you may realise. Any imperfections will be hard to ignore and cleaning them doesn’t always fix the issue.
Paintmaster’s kitchen paint is as tough as they come. When paired with a white primer, 2-3 coats of kitchen paint will make your walls resistant to most scuffs and marks. There’s nothing more frustrating than spotting a scratch on freshly painted surfaces; choose a paint that won’t let you down.
Best Paint for Kitchen Tiles
Many people choose to have tiles around their kitchen, especially above the oven. These look great, and are easy to maintain if you clean regularly, but are often neglected when it’s time to redecorate.
Painting tiles can be fiddly, especially if you want to avoid painting the grout, but the results are more than worth it. Just like with your walls, a fresh coat of paint will protect the tile surface, making it look better for longer.
Excessive cleaning can also wear away some tile paints. Our kitchen paint is fully washable the same way that oil-based gloss and acrylic gloss is, meaning you can clean it as often as you’d like without worrying about the colour fading. And thanks to its water-based compound, grease stains and splashes of food won’t stick, saving you from a lot of scrubbing!
Best Paint for Kitchen Ceilings
It’s common to paint your walls every few years to brighten up your home. However, many people forget that above their heads is a surface that needs attention too.
Ceilings need repainting every decade or so, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. As steam rises, it will make your ceiling damp, creating off-colour patches near your stove or sink. If you’re repainting your walls, a patchy or discoloured ceiling will stand out like a sore thumb, letting the side down in the process. It can even develop mould if ignored for too long!
Your ceiling doesn’t endure the same wear and tear as walls, floors, and your kitchen surfaces, but it still needs a freshen up every now and then. 1-2 coats of our kitchen paint will do the trick, and it’ll help your other painted surfaces look better too!
Best Paint for Kitchen Surfaces
When you’re doing up your kitchen, you don’t have to stop at your walls and ceilings. There are multiple other surfaces that can be painted if you really want to transform your kitchen.
Painting kitchen cupboards is a great way to modernise your kitchen, but you might need a specific type of paint. If your cupboards are plain wood, and don’t have the plasticky coating of a modern fitting, they can be painted with our interior satinwood paint.
If your cupboards are showing some wear, or have been coated, we recommend sanding them down before you apply paint. Interior paints and multi-surface primers are designed to cling to the exposed surface – if there is a barrier or multiple layers of paint already in place you’ll get a streaky or thin finish.
At the very least, you should always clean kitchen cupboards thoroughly before applying new paint.
Your kitchen surfaces also need a splash of paint sometimes. Even granite worktops can wear out over time, and with a lot of cups, mugs, dishes, plates, and cookware in your kitchen some stains and marks are inevitable.
Wooden surfaces are easy to repaint, again you get the best results by sanding them first, but some stone worktops might reject standard paints. Always make sure you know what material you’re painting and consult the manufacturer’s instructions on your paint before you commit.
Best Colour to Paint Kitchens
There are a wide range of colour options for kitchen walls, but some are more popular than others. A muted grey is currently recommended for modern kitchens, as it complements other surfaces and isn’t too light or too dark at any time of day.
In a similar vein, muted blues, greens, yellows, and other shades are also popular. They add a little colour without being too bold. The way your kitchen is furnished is a major factor too, as wooden cupboards may clash with plain white walls, whereas a granite worktop might not look good next to a bright yellow or pink.
However, the best paint for kitchens is all down to personal preference. As you spend a lot of time here, and it’s one of the first rooms you’ll show off to friends and family, it should reflect you and your individual tastes.
A bright colour can make your kitchen look brighter during the day, or more welcoming. A cooler or muted shade is more subtle, but still looks great.
