The weather has been getting a lot nicer, so we imagine you’ve been spending more time in your garden. Maybe for a big gathering like a barbeque, or just to soak up some rays before the sun goes down.

Whatever the reason, is there anything in your garden that’s a bit of an eyesore? Your fence could be looking worse for wear, or your patio is covered with dirt and grime. And what about your garden buildings? Over time, sheds and garages lose their lustre, and need a little TLC to prevent damage and keep them looking their best.

Thankfully, all of these issues can be solved with some quality garden building paint from Paintmaster.

Can Garden Buildings be Painted?

Yes! Almost all exterior surfaces can be painted, as long as you have the right paint and prepare the surface correctly. Garden buildings are usually sheds/barns, garages, or greenhouses. The latter’s glass naturally cannot be painted, but the floor and its frame certainly can.

Exterior surfaces need to be painted in order to protect them for the elements. Untreated wood and stone will wear away after years of exposure.

Stone paths and patios suffer a lot from standing water. Rain seeps into cracks and expands them, or causes more wear out of sight. This is especially bad in winter, as frost and snow damages stone much faster.

It isn’t just bad weather either. If your stone walls or shed are exposed to direct sunlight every day, the surface will lose its colour over time, creating a ‘bleached’ look on specific sides.

This can happen even if the surface is already painted, which makes it especially important to use the right paint.

Best Paints for Barns and Sheds

If you’re repainting your barn or shed, you naturally have 2 goals in mind. First, you want to protect the surface for years to come, ideally around a decade to get the most value for money.

Second, and arguably more important, you want it to look great. This means picking the best colour, sheen, and pairing it with a primer to keep it looking better for longer and enhancing its overall look.

Our shed and fence paint, as the name suggests, is the perfect paint for the job.

And in this case, you have two to choose from. When painting exterior surfaces, you’ll always have the option of water-based paint and oil-based paint. Both have their pros and cons; water-based paint is:

  • Easier to apply
  • Has lower VOCs and minimal odour
  • Has more colour options
  • Has more sheen options

Whereas oil-based paint is:

  • More durable
  • Better water resistance
  • High sheen levels

Although the durability of oil-based paint is higher, our acrylic shed and fence paint is almost as durable, despite being water-based.

The Best Paint for Sheds

Naturally, we think both of our shed and fence paints are pretty great. The best one for you is mostly down to personal preference.

If you’re relatively new to exterior painting, you’ll thank yourself for picking acrylic. It also has a faster drying time, if you don’t have much time to spare or are wary of the weather changing.

Because of its glossy finish, the way oil-based paint looks is unmatched. If you want your garden buildings to look shiny in the sun, it’s the way to go.

With a lot of our other paints, choosing the oil-based option leaves you with fewer colour choices, so you aren’t able to be as bold as with acrylic. But for our shed and fence paint, both options are part of our colour system – simply enter a British Standard or RAL colour code and we’ll whip up the exact shade you need. This allows you to make your shed a centerpiece of your garden, or blend in perfectly to other surfaces.

And as you may have noticed, this paint is also perfect for your fences! We know that exterior painting is a lot of work, and with so many different surfaces the cost can add up quick, so we make sure our paints are as versatile as possible. You can use this paint on sheds, fences, wooden furniture, and more! So be sure to order plenty so you can use it on everything.

How to Paint Sheds and Garden Buildings

We already have an in-depth shed painting guide on our blog, but here’s a few pointers if you’re especially keen to get started.

The most important part of any exterior painting project is the prep. If your surfaces are dirty, or are covered in flaking paint, you need to take the time to clean it all off properly. A pressure washer is the fastest solution, and some can work with paint stripper too, then you can use some soap, water, and elbow grease for the rest.

This is a hassle, but it’s vital. Any imperfections in the surface like dirt or old paint will show through even multiple layers of new paint, so you need to make sure the surface is spotless before you dip your paintbrush or load your paint roller.

When you do start painting, always make sure to overlap each stroke to ensure even coverage. A sprayer can also be used for large surfaces, just be sure to protect everything else before you start!

Otherwise, a combination of roller and brush is all you need.
