Description

When youโ€™re painting any surface, either inside or outside, you always want the best finish possible. If youโ€™ve splashed out on high quality paint, a streaky or uneven finish can be a waste of time and money.

If you use the best undercoat for the job, youโ€™ll guarantee a much better finish. Our oil-based undercoat is one of the toughest exterior paints available and is easy to apply too.

What is an Undercoat?

Most paints require 2-3 layers of paint. There are very few that are one-and-done, and even the toughest oil paints need 1-2 at least.
The first layer you apply is your undercoat. This creates a better base for your paint, leading to bolder colours and a smooth finish.

You should always use primer before your undercoat to maximise the quality of the finish. Primer is designed to cling to the bare surface better than paint will, making the surface much easier to paint onto. Sometimes when primer is recommended the first layer is referred to as a โ€˜mid-coatโ€™ to avoid confusion.

When to Apply an Undercoat

Undercoats are commonly used in most painting projects, as youโ€™ll naturally apply multiple layers. Theyโ€™re especially important for exterior painting projects, as these surfaces are often rougher or have more imperfections.

Before you apply your paint (or primer!) itโ€™s vital that you prepare the surface properly first. No matter what youโ€™re painting, or how exposed to the elements it may be, you need to give it a thorough clean. Soap, water, and a bit of elbow grease may do the trick, but degreaser and/or paint stripper will be needed for older surfaces that have been painted or varnished in the past.

Our oil-based undercoat is perfect for tricky applications like painting wood or metal. When used as an undercoat it ensures long-lasting durability and preventing paint from peeling or flaking over time. Oil-based paint is thicker than a water-based equivalent, which means it will naturally fill in some small imperfections, creating a faultless finish once the final layer has dried.

Speaking of drying, thatโ€™s another benefit of our oil-based undercoat. Unlike other oil-based paint, this is quick-drying, allowing you to progress with your painting project without unnecessary delays.

Where to Apply an Undercoat

As we mentioned, our oil-based undercoat is perfect for exterior painting. This makes it the best undercoat for:

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Plaster
  • Masonry

You can use it for everything from garden furniture to door frames, stonework to patios. Thanks to the oil-based compound, it repels water and moisture better than other types of paint. if youโ€™re concerned about standing water ruining your finish, or the surface will be exposed to a lot of rain over the years, look no further.

Best Colour for Undercoat

Choosing the right colour for your painting project is always tough. The shade will look its boldest when multiple layers are applied, with the undercoat normally looking thinner.

If youโ€™re concerned about what the final product will look like, we recommend testing your paint on an inconspicuous area first. Then you can see how it will look when itโ€™s dried, and in different light levels.

Our oil-based undercoat is available in the following colours:

  • Light Grey
  • Mid Grey
  • Rustic Red
  • Black
  • White

The sheen is important to consider too. Oil-based paints are glossier than water-based, so itโ€™s only best if you like it to reflect some light. If you prefer a matte finish, youโ€™ll struggle to find an oil-based undercoat thatโ€™s right for you.

FAQ's

Oil-based undercoat or Water-based undercoat?

Oil-based undercoats are more hardwearing and will most likely create a stronger adhesion between the surface and the topcoat. Also, oil-based undercoats will protect the surface from the elements better than water-based undercoat will.

However, water-based undercoats will dry a lot faster than oil-based will, so you can add the topcoat after only a couple hours. Also, water-based undercoats have a much weaker odour, plus you can wash your brushes out with water, whereas with oil-based undercoats you will need white spirit to wash your paint brush.

What colour Oil-based undercoat should I get?

Lots of people assume that it doesn’t matter what colour undercoat you use as the topcoat will just cover it anyway, but this isn’t the case. We would recommend that you use an undercoat that is just a bit lighter than the topcoat, so that it’s clearer to see where you are painting when it comes to applying to topcoat.

If you were to use white oil-based undercoat when you’re using a dark coloured topcoat, you may have to apply an extra coat of paint which means you’re spending more time than you need to, and using more paint.

What is oil-based undercoat used for?

Oil-based undercoat can be used on a variety of surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry, and more. They are used to create a smooth and solid base for the topcoat to be applied to ensure long lasting durability, and a professional finish.
