Description

When picking the perfect paint for your next project, there are two main things you need to consider. The first and most obvious is the colour. A durable paint will last for many years if you spend your money wisely, thatโ€™s many years of frustration or a dent in your savings if you arenโ€™t a fan of the colour and either have to put up with it or change it.

The second thing you need to think about is the sheen. This is how much light your painted surface will reflect, which has a big impact on how it looks. Low sheen (such as matt paint) can look flat or dull, whereas high sheen like gloss can create too much glare in direct light, both natural and artificial.

If you arenโ€™t sure which sheen levels are right for surfaces like interior walls or exterior surfaces like fences, why not keep things simple and go straight down the middle? Our acrylic eggshell paint is the best of both worlds and looks fantastic on interior walls especially.

Why Choose an Eggshell Finish for Interior Walls?

An โ€˜eggshellโ€™ finish, created by our aptly named eggshell paint, has a similar texture to the shell of an egg. Itโ€™s not too rough but has enough texture to give it a 3D look that is perfect for a large open surface.

Eggshell paint is most commonly used on walls but is a lot more versatile than you may realise. Our acrylic eggshell paint is a durable water-based emulsion, making it ideal for all kinds of interior environments. This includes ceilings, doors, door frames, interior furniture, and even cupboard doors. If you love the look of the eggshell texture, donโ€™t be limited by whatโ€™s popular, and make the most of your eggshell paint.

Eggshell Paint for Durability

When you picture a surface that suffers a lot of wear and tear, interior walls are low down the list. We canโ€™t deny that they arenโ€™t as easily worn as skirting boards, doors, and our floors, but durability is still important when youโ€™re picking paint for walls.

A lot of our walls suffer nothing more than the occasional scrape when youโ€™re moving furniture around, but others need to resist a lot more. Hallways especially are bumped by bags, the hoover, and a few passing elbows. Thereโ€™s pet traffic too, dog owners will know the pain of their pooch rubbing themselves along their walls after they get in from a walk.

Our acrylic eggshell paint was designed with durability in mind. Itโ€™s tougher than most, making it harder to scuff or scratch the surface. If your prime it first, youโ€™ll add an extra couple of years, helping you to get the most out of your money.

As it is a water-based paint, itโ€™s also much easier to clean. Oil-based paints can be ruined by some cleaning products โ€“ not something you need to worry about with acrylic.

Acrylic paints in general are more beginner-friendly than others that may get you a similar result, but only if you know how to make the most of it. If youโ€™re relatively new to interior painting, eggshell paint or something else from our water-based range will suit you best. If youโ€™re a tradesperson, water-based paints are still excellent for your needs, and often oil-based paints are only best if you need some extra durability or prefer a higher sheen level.

Eggshell paint is also air-drying, meaning that it can be used in a range of interior surfaces and left to dry overnight. It also has virtually no VOCs or unpleasant fumes, so ventilation is less important.

The Best Colour for Eggshell Paint

As we mentioned earlier, choosing the right colour for your paint is crucial, no matter what surface youโ€™re using it for.

Your interior walls are some of the largest paintable surfaces in your home. In commercial or industrial spaces theyโ€™re even bigger. To be 100% certain that itโ€™s the right choice, we always recommend testing your paint in an inconspicuous area first to see how it looks. However, it can look different when covering the full surface; be sure to keep this in mind before you commit.

Our eggshell paint is available in a range of colours that complement the sheen level. This includes:

  • White
  • Light Grey
  • Cream
  • Magnolia

These are some of the most popular colours for interior walls especially. They are fairly muted but have just enough colour to be visually interesting. Sometimes a subtle shade is the way to go, as it wonโ€™t take away from your furnishings and other painted surfaces.

If you do want to be bold with your walls, donโ€™t click away! Our acrylic eggshell paint is part of our colour system. Simply enter a British Standard or RAL code at checkout and weโ€™ll mix the perfect colour for eggshell paint.

Acrylic paints create some of the boldest colours. When paired with a mid-sheen finish like eggshell any colour, warm, cold, light, or dark, will look amazing.

FAQ's

How should I apply Eggshell Paint?

The first question you may ask yourself is do I need a primer? The answer is no, but we highly recommend you do use one, as it will help the paint adhere to the surface better, whilst also improving the paints durability, and can also make sure there’s an even colour.

We suggest you apply 2 thin even coats of eggshell paint using either a paint brush or roller (or both), giving yourself at least 6 hours after the first coat before starting your next coat.

Is Eggshell Paint easy to clean?

Our Eggshell Paint is washable, and stain-resistant, which is ideal for keeping a long lasting appearance. Any dirt, spillages or scuffs can be simply wiped away with a damp cloth and some soap, which means you won’t have to repaint the surface to often.

What is Eggshell Paint?

Eggshell paint is a type of interior emulsion paint with a soft, low-sheen finish, similar to an egg shell (hence the name). It does provide a slightly glossy finish which makes the paint more durable than you’re typical matt emulsion paint, but not as reflective as a specialist gloss paint.

You would commonly use eggshell paint on interior walls in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and any other area you wish to have a durable, yet subtle finish. On top of walls this paint is commonly used on ceilings, woodwork, and furniture.

What is the difference between eggshell, satin, and gloss paint?

  • Eggshell Paint: Low-sheen, soft finish, moderately durable. Best for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Satinwood Paint: More sheen and durability than eggshell paint. Good for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Gloss Paint: High shine and very durable. Ideal for skirting boards, doors, and exterior surfaces (e.g. Outdoor Furniture).
