The sun is finally out, so now is the time to start thinking about your exterior painting projects. After a long winter and a drizzly spring, the walls of your home may be looking a little worse for wear, or they’re long overdue for a freshen up.
Either way, painting cladding is a fantastic place to start. Not only is cladding easier to paint than bare exterior walls, the results look amazing. But only if you have the best cladding paint for the job.
Our acrylic cladding paint is perfect for all types of cladding. Read on to find out why!
What is Cladding?
Cladding is an external layer applied to the outside of a home or building. This means that you can improve the look of the walls, or protect them from the elements. External cladding is popular for both new and old buildings, but is often preferred for the latter to improve kerb appeal and therefore increase the value of the property.
There are 5 types of material used for cladding:
- uPVC
- Wood
- Metal
- Fibre Cement
- Composite Materials
It isn’t just an aesthetic change though! Cladding protects your walls, handling the brunt of the weather damage throughout the year. A layer of cladding can also help to improve insulation, potentially saving you money on your energy bills.
It isn’t always cheap and can be tricky to install, but cladding has a lot of benefits. So if you have invested in some nice cladding for your walls, keeping them looking good should be on your priority list.
Can you Paint Cladding?
Out of the 5 types of cladding, all but one of them can always be painted. Some composite cladding is paintable, but not all, so you should always check the manufacturer’s guidance before you pick up any paint.
All the others can be painted no problem. uPVC can cause a little trouble, but if you have a specialist uPVC cladding paint it’ll be a breeze.
What is the Best Paint for Cladding?
Our acrylic paint can be used on all types of cladding, so you can pick it up and get started with no issues whatsoever.
As an acrylic paint, it is water-based, with a semi-gloss finish that reflects some light, but reduces glare on bright surfaces. We’ve carefully crafted its compound to make it UV resistant and fully weatherproof, keeping your walls looking great for a long time.
Some professional painters prefer oil-based paints because they’re tougher, but with our advanced compound you won’t notice the difference, and they’re much easier to work with.
To make it look its best, and ensure optimal protection, we always recommend pairing even the best cladding paint with an undercoat of primer. This will create a better surface for your paint to stick to, and primer enhances the colour once the paint has dried.
The Best Colours for Cladding
This is a tricky one, as the type of cladding will determine how certain colours look. A smooth uPVC, for example, might make a certain colour look glossier, while timber cladding has more texture that shows through the paint.
It’s also entirely down to your personal preference. You might want a subtle colour that complements features like your front door, garage door, or the exterior walls that are on show. Or you choose a bright colour that will stand out and be the envy of your neighbours.
Whatever colour you think is best, we have it in stock. We offer the following acrylic cladding paint colour options:
- Light Grey Cladding Paint
- Mid Grey Cladding Paint
- Dark Grey Cladding Paint
- Rustic Red Cladding Paint
- Brown Cladding Paint

- Dark Green Cladding Paint
- Post Office Red Cladding Paint
- JCB Yellow Cladding Paint

That’s already a lot to choose from, but it gets even better! Our cladding paint is part of our Colour System, meaning we can mix any colour you can think of as long as you have the colour code to hand.
How to Paint Cladding
Once you have the perfect paint, in the perfect colour, it’s time to get down to business. Choose a couple of dry days with low wind to reduce the risk of streaks.
The first and most important thing is to clean your cladding as thoroughly as possible. Any dirt, grime, or wear will show through multiple layers of primer and paint. A pressure washer will get the job done, but you might need a degreaser for metal surfaces.
This cleaning will reveal any damage to the cladding surface. Just like with dirt, these imperfections will show through your paint, and your goal of making the walls look like new won’t work. Make sure you patch up any damage before you start painting.
For the best results, you should now sand the surface to remove any caked-on dirt and ensure maximum protection for the cladding itself. Once done, you should apply your layer of primer and let it dry.
Finally, apply your paint using a brush and roller combination or a sprayer. Make sure to overlap your roller and brush strokes for even coverage. 2-3 coats should be plenty.
Then you’re done! Your cladding should be looking better than new, and you’ll be proud of your hard work every time you walk up to the front door.
