Masonry Paints

Painting masonry is a great way to improve the look of tired stonework, bricks, and other areas of your home. But unlike a lot of interior painting projects, the paints involved can be tricky for beginners to use correctly. Don’t worry, that’s where we come in.

Should I Paint Masonry?

If you want to improve the kerb appeal of your home, you can make your masonry surfaces look like new with masonry paint.

Our quality masonry paints are designed to cling to the stone surface. This not only creates a bold colour and faultless finish but adds extra protection to the surface too. Inferior or incorrect paint will wear away in a year or two, whereas our masonry paint looks great for a long time.

Even masonry surfaces that aren’t directly exposed to the elements, such as sheltered patios, go through a lot. That’s why it’s so important to preserve the surface. Our paints even make masonry easier to clean, so maintenance is much less taxing.

Masonry paint can be trickier to apply than other exterior paints, but using quality products and our in-depth guide helps even new painters to get it right first time.

Types of Masonry Paint

Choosing the right type of masonry paint is crucial to get the best results. Different masonry surfaces need specially suited paint as the amount they absorb can vary.

There are 3 main types of masonry paint to choose from:

  • Limewash
  • Silicate
  • Acrylic

Limewash masonry paint is only recommended for lime render homes, which are usually listed buildings. Other types of paint damage the old surfaces, which need a higher level of breathability.

Silicate masonry paint is very durable but expensive and not beginner friendly. It is ideal for tradespeople and painters with a lot of experience and is also normally used on listed buildings etc.

Acrylic masonry paint is the best of both worlds as it lasts for years and is easy to work with. It also has a range of finishes and hundreds of colours; the choices are endless. This is the masonry paint we recommend for most homes.

How to Paint Masonry

Cleaning Masonry

Like all painting projects, you’ll need to clean the surface thoroughly before you start painting. Masonry surfaces that are exposed to the elements day after day gather a lot of dirt and grime. If this isn’t removed before you apply paint or primer, it will show through multiple layers, ruining the look of your masonry as well as reducing the longevity of the paint.

Priming Masonry

Applying a quality primer, such as Paintmaster Stabilising primer, is also important for the best finish and reduces the amount of paint you’ll need due to absorbency reduction. Even specially designed masonry paint clings better to primer than the surface itself, resulting in bolder colour and an extra layer of protection from exposure.

Painting Masonry

Once the primer has dried, a few coats of your chosen masonry paint will transform your bricks and stonework.
