Is It Possible to Paint My House in Winter?

One of the most common questions that many professional painters and decorators deal with is whether it is possible to paint a house in Winter. A lot of painters will turn down external projects in Winter, but some are happy to carry out painting and decorating with the right equipment. With access to high-quality gloss undercoat and premium masonry paint, most painters and decorators will be able to create a high-quality paintjob, even in Winter.

Winter is often the time of year where we recognise serious issues with our property. These issues can include purely cosmetic problems, or structural damage to unprotected wood and other surfaces. In these cases, you’ll want to resolve the issues as quickly as possible. Here at Paintmaster, we can provide large quantities of premium paints, undercoats and bases to suit your needs.

Throughout December 2018, we’re also offering 10% off all Paintmaster bases and undercoats in-store! So, if you’re looking for industry-leading bases and paints, don’t hesitate to head in-store for great deals and savings on Paintmaster products!

Can Homes and Businesses Be Painted in the Winter Months?

It is true that painting your home or business in the Winter is significantly harder than in Summer. The days are far shorter and there are many other obstacles which can negatively impact your home or business. For example, the cold and the increased likelihood of rain can all work to delay your project from being completed.

So long as you (or your painters and decorators), take the increasingly difficult conditions into account, it is possible for the project to be completed in Winter. Most painters and decorators are only likely to work in Winter during reduced hours – often between 9:30 am and 2:00 pm. There are several reasons for this, including:

  • Reduced Daylight Hours – In Winter, the availability of daylight is significantly reduced. Few painters and decorators will be willing to work on an external painting project in the dark.
  • Increased Risk of Rain – Another reason that painters and decorators may be unwilling to work normal hours is the likelihood of rain, snow and other weather issues impeding the project. Realistically, painted surfaces need to be kept dry in order to, well, dry. Rain, snow, hail and other issues can all cause serious problems with any painted surface which hasn’t full dried.
  • Cold Weather – As soon as the sun disappears, it can get bitterly cold – you don’t us to tell you that. Most masonry paints and gloss undercoat will struggle to dry if the weather is too cold. This can be one of the most serious problems, in that there often isn’t enough time for paint to fully dry in a single day.

If you want to paint or treat any external surface in Winter, you need to make sure your painter and decorator is using the correct equipment. This can include everything from the correct safety equipment to the right kinds of paints. If you’re looking for premium, quick-drying and hard-wearing gloss undercoat and masonry paint to suit your home or business, get in touch today.

How Does a Surface’s Temperature Impact the Undercoat and Masonry Paint?

If you’ve ever tried to paint a surface first thing in the morning, you’ll know that the temperature of your home or business’ wall matters. Your wall may be significantly colder than the air temperature around your property. As such, you should always leave some time at the start of the day for your external walls to heat up.

When painting during the winter, you should always time the actual painting for the middle of the day. This will give your walls enough time to warm in the morning sun. It will also give the masonry paint or gloss undercoat the opportunity to dry before the sun sets.
